Lenses
At Professional Eye Associates we believe in offering only the best technology in lens design and materials. Our goal is to provide the highest quality products so we only see you back for minor frame adjustments during the year.
Types of Lens Designs
- Single – vision lenses
This type of lens is most commonly used for single applications of nearsightedness and/or farsightedness. - Mid-distance lenses
This type of reading lens is most commonly prescribed for computer users and gives wearers good vision at near and intermediate distances one to five meters, depending on the correction. These lenses do not deliver clear distance. - Bifocal Lenses
Bifocals deliver near and distant vision, but have a visible separation line that is an obstacle for eyes, forcing them to make an abrupt transition. - Trifocals
Trifocals deliver near, intermediate, and distance vision, but have a visible separation line that is an obstacle for eyes, forcing them to make an abrupt transition. - Progressive Lenses
Progressive lenses deliver clear vision at any distance thanks to a sophisticated lens surface tailored to eye movements and correction requirements. Wears make a natural seamless, strain-free transition from close to intermediate vision and intermediate to distance vision.
New Advancement for Bifocal Wearers
Varilux introduces the only progressive lens specifically design for bifocal wears. Thanks to new technology Varilux Liberty offers bifocal wears crisp and wide distance vision, with an easy transition from distance to near. And no visual image jumps or unsightly bifocal lines.
Lens Materials
- Glass:
Glass lenses are not commonly used in ophthalmic eyewear in the industry today. Glass is very heavy and cosmetically unattractive. -
CR-39:
Most popular lens material used today for a wide variety of single vision and multifocal designs. -
Polycarbonate:
This lens has a low specific gravity, which makes this material especially thin and light in weight. This material is an extremely impact resistant, making polycarbonate lens particularly useful for industrial safety applications as well as for use in children's eyewear. -
High Index Lenses:
This lens is a thinner and lighter material used as an alternative for people with moderate to high prescriptions. High Index Lenses are more cosmetically appealing than CR-39 (plastic). -
Polarized Lenses:
Polarized lenses are useful for reducing the amount of glare reflected off surfaces such as water, snow, or metallic surfaces. A polarized lens contains a filter of polyvinyl alchohol, which has be layered or “sandwiched” between the glass or plastic material. - UV:
A method of specially treating ophthalmic lenses so that most of the ultraviolet wavelengths will be absorbed by the lens. - Transitions:
Transitions respond to ultraviolet light and automatically darken with increased illumination and lighten as illumination decreases. Has “exposure memory.” Lenses will change more readily after initial exposure to light. Transitions are available in two colors brown or gray, and a variety of lens materials for all prescriptions.
Other Coatings
- Antireflection Coating:
A thin clear film applied to the lens, which serves to reduce unwanted reflections and at the same time increase the amount of light that passes through the lens to the eye. -
Scratch Resistant Coating:
Lens manufactures developed excellent coatings, which significantly increase resistance to scratching. -
Edge Coating:
A color coating applied to the edge of a higher minus lenses, which matches the color of the frame. When used properly, it tends to camouflage the thick edge of the lens and at the same time minimizes the concentric circles, which can result from reflections off the edge. -
Mirror Coating:
A coating applied to the front surface of a lens through a vacuum process, which causes the lens to assume properties similar to a two-way mirror.
