Regular eye exams are the only way to catch "silent" diseases such as diabetes, glaucoma and other conditions in their early stages, when they're more easily managed or treated. Many conditions can be discovered in a carefully planned eye exam. Those who consider mass-produced, over the counter reading glasses are trulydoing themselves a disservice, both financially, and medically.

One-size-fits-all reading glasses not only do not work well for most people who have a different prescription in each eye, and/or astigmatism, or whose lens and frame parameters are not measured correctly, they bypass the opportunity to have their eyes checked for early detection of many manageable diseases or conditions. For those insisting on selecting glasses not measured specifically for there eyes, headaches and eye fatigue are common symptoms.

There are some signs you can watch for that suggest testing by an optometrist is needed. The most common signs include blurry vision, excessive eyestrain, headaches, not seeing well at night, frequent squinting or blinking, and seeing “floating” spots.

If you see things up close just fine but have trouble seeing objects at a distance, you may have nearsightedness. Other symptoms of this condition include frequent squinting, difficulty viewing television, and trouble seeing at night.

If you can see distant objects clearly but have blurry close-up vision, farsightedness may be the problem. Other signs of farsightedness are headaches, eyestrain, and blinking excessively.

If your vision is blurry both close up and at a distance, astigmatism may be the cause. If you have astigmatism, you’re also likely to experience extreme eye fatigue, watery eyes, and difficulty working on a computer.

If you experience changes in your vision, it’s time to assess and evaluate your eye care needs. If your vision can be corrected with glasses, you will enjoy seeing clearly once again. The best way to determine if you need glasses is to visit an optometrist for a thorough eye exam.

The term “lazy eye” is a generic term most often used to describe a number of different conditions:

• Crossed Eyes (Strabismus)

• Poor Vision (Amblyopia)

• Droopy Eyelid (Ptosis)

The dilation spray or drops will normally sting slightly when they are applied. Afterwards, there is light sensitivity and blurred vision at a close range that persists for several hours. There is no pain involved.

For children, a special dilating drop or spray is used in the office that will cause an enlarged pupil, light sensitivity and blurred vision when focusing at a close range. This normally will last approximately 6 to 8 hours.

For adults, a different dilating drop is used that will cause the same effects but should last approximately 2 to 4 hours. Caution should be taken with driving. We provide free disposable sunglasses or dark sunglasses inserts. We recommend avoiding driving or operating dangerous machinery immediately afterwards. We recommend that someone accompany you to drive you home if you feel uncomfortable doing so.

A routine examination does not hurt at all. The examining lights can be bright, but these are only for short moments. If for various reasons you need a medicated eye drop (like anaesthetic for measuring eye pressure, or dilating drops), these sting a little bit for about 30 seconds.

When you go for your annual eye exam you should bring the glasses you currently use, the names of any medicine you are taking and the name of your doctor (i.e. GP, specialist, etc). Bring your old prescription with you (if you still have it).

Standard Eye Examination at Visionnaires should take about 30 minutes to one hour. Some standard routine tests will be conducted, but the exact tests will vary from person to person as everyone has different problems, needs and requirements that need to be addressed. It will typically include a short consultation, Occupational Vision Assessment, Glaucoma Screening, Cataract Screening, Retinal Health Screening and an evaluation of your eyesight.

Ocular Refraction will be necessary thereafter if you are getting new spectacles. If you require contact lenses, you will also need to undergo a Cornea Health Assessment. Children will automatically be given a Paediatric Eye Test and Senior Citizens will be given a Geriatric Eye
Test.

If metal frames cause a reaction, nickel's usually the culprit. Most metal frames are made of a nickel alloy. Other metals used include aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, zinc, copper, beryllium, gold and silver. Stainless, titanium, gold and silver are usually hypoallergenic.

Most plastic eyeglass frames are made of zyl (also called zylonite, acetate and cellulose acetate) or propionate. Other materials used in plastic frames include: polyamide, nylon, polycarbonate, carbon and Optyl (a brand of epoxy resin). Propionate, polyamide, nylon and Optyl frames are all considered hypoallergenic.

Some people can also be allergic to the nose pads on metal frames. Most are made of silicone or acetate, but they can also be made out of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), nickel, titanium or rubber. Silicone is tricky. Certain silicones are hypoallergenic (such as medical silicone), but others can trigger allergic reactions. Both PVC and titanium are usually hypoallergenic.

There can be many causes for this condition. However, many times this problem can be alleviated, or even dismissed, with the use of "AR" (Anti Reflective) Lenses. First and foremost, however, annual, or semi-annual eye exams are the ONLY avenue to your eye health, and the ONLY resource to ascertain the correct reason or cause for any eye ailment! The visual channel that progresses from distance vision to near vision is wider, and more accurate for that 'Tween' vision necessary for clarity in the area too far for close, and to close for far. It is a wonderful lens for desktop and computer use as well. Please note, that in a few of the especially small frames, not all frames can be a successful candidate fora progressive lens. With this in mind, our opticians will help you with a proper fit.

If your eyes are subjected to intense glare during the day, they will "defend themselves" by trying to adapt. This natural built-in defense mechanism will persist for several hours after the glare is removed, resulting in reduced vision. Studies show that night vision can be reduced by as much as 50% by this exposure. Wearing sunglasses during the day dramatically improves night vision.

Plastic lenses do not protect your eyes. You need to have UV protection from UV rays, which are not inherent in a plastic lens. You can have a UV protective coating applied to a plastic lens, but polycarbonate lenses have built-in UV protection. Glass lenses protect your eyes from harmful UVB rays but not from UVA. Some experts think UVA rays might have long-term, damaging effects to your eyes and skin.

Progressive lenses, sometimes called "no-line bifocals," eliminate the visible lines of traditional bifocals and trifocals and hide the fact that you need reading glasses. With progressive lenses, no one has to know whether you're wearing glasses just for fashion or because your arms have "grown too short" for you to see up close.

Instead of having just two or three lens powers like bifocals or trifocals, progressive lenses are true "multifocal" lenses that provide a seamless progression of many lens powers for all viewing distances. With progressive lenses, you can look up to see clearly across the room and in the distance. You also can look ahead to view your computer in the intermediate zone and drop your gaze downward to read and do fine work comfortably through the near zone of the lenses.

There is no age limit: babies can wear them, and so can seniors. Many eye care professionals begin to encourage contact lens wear at age 11 to 14. The real issue for teens is not age, but whether they are responsible enough to wear and care for contact lenses properly. Parents, teens, and their eye care practitioner must make this decision together.

Just like any other prescription, contact lens prescriptions have an expiration date. The expiration date will be one year or more from the date that the contact lens prescription was determined. If your eye doctor issues a contact lens prescription for less than one year, he or she will tell you the reason why it is necessary, and will write that reason in your record.

We fit all types of contact lenses including disposable, rigid, astigmatism correcting and bifocals. We also fit custom lenses for high prescriptions and diseases of the eye such as keratoconus.

The cost of contact lenses can vary greatly. If you have a difficult prescription or need correction for problems like astigmatism, your lenses will be more expensive. If you have no special requirements, your options will range from daily disposables (the highest cost) to extended-wear contacts.

Unlike glasses, contacts offer athletes a competitive advantage because they stay in place under dynamic conditions, provide a wider vision field, and eliminate the risk of glasses-related injuries. Contact lenses also make it easy to wear protective goggles.

This is a common and natural concern, more often experienced by males, since females are accustomed to touching the eyelids when applying makeup.

It helps to first get used to touching your eyes without applying a lens. One very successful technique is to place a warm (not hot) drop of water on your index finger and bring it up to the eye and actually touch your eye. The water has a numbing effect such that you may not
even feel your finger against your eye. Your eye care professional may also decide to use a numbing drop immediately prior to applying contact lenses for the first time.

It's easier than you think to get used to lens application. If fact, often when people get used to inserting and removing lenses, they question why they did not make the commitment to contact lenses sooner.

Ask your doctor. It depends on the type of lens you're wearing, the composition of your tear film, your general eye health, and other factors. Extended-wear contact lenses and certain soft lenses can be slept in, but never wear them while sleeping unless your eye care practitioner says you can.

Soft contact lenses are available that will change the color of your eyes, even if you don't require vision correction. Costume lenses for Halloween or theatrical purposes are also available.

Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) Contact lenses sometimes have a color "handling tint," a light tint that makes them easier to see, but RGPs are not available in colors that will change the appearance of your eyes. A contact lens is smaller than the size of the iris, so RGP color lenses would not look natural.

All color contacts are prescribed medical devices that must be fitted and followed up by your eye care professional. And remember, even though such lenses might provoke curiosity by your friends and family members, never share them with anyone. Sharing lenses can lead to dangerous health problems.

Yes. Astigmatism is distorted vision caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. Contact lenses for astigmatism are called toric lenses, and they come in both soft and GP contact lens materials.

GP contacts tend to work better for astigmatism, because they are custom-fit to your eyes' particular shape; also, their firm material keeps its original shape more when you blink. In addition, moderate amounts of astigmatism may be corrected with a regular, non-toric GP contact lens.

We provide laser vision consultations in order to let people know if they are a good candidate for laser vision correction or other refractive surgical options. The pre and post operative care are performed in our office, and we will refer you to the out-patient laser surgery facility that would best meet your needs.

After the order is placed by our Optician, it can take typically 5-10 days to have them made and delivered. Depending on what's ordered, it might take a little longer. We'll always keep you updated and let you know the day they come in!
