Patient Information

  • The following information is based on a current review of the literature and it is updated on a regular basis. We tailor our treatment plan to each individual. You should be able to find a treatment plan that we discussed with you below.

  • Prevention

  • Blepharitis is an ocular disease characterized by inflammation of the eyelid margins and glands. Blepharitis may cause redness, itching, and irritation of the eyes and eyelids. Its appearance is often confused with conjunctivitis and due to its recurring nature, as well as dry eye by patients due to the gritty sensation that may occur. However, lubricating drops do little to improve the condition.

    Classification

There are two types of blepharitis:

  • Dry eye syndrome (DES), or simply dry eyes, is an eye disease caused by decreased tear production or increased tear film evaporation.

    Epidemiology

Dry eye syndrome is relatively common within the United States, affecting those aged 40 or older. Aging is one of the most common causes of dry eyes, because tear production decreases with age.

  • Treatment
    General measures

  • Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve. The major risk factor for most glaucomas is increased intraocular pressure of aqueous fluid in the aqueous chamber of the eye. One person may develop nerve damage at a relatively low pressure, while another person may have high eye pressure for years and yet never develop damage. Untreated glaucoma leads to permanent damage of the optic nerve and resultant visual field loss, which can progress to blindness.
